Despite progress in HIV testing and treatment coverage, advanced HIV disease (AHD) remains a persistent contributor to morbidity and mortality across sub-Saharan Africa.
Global guidance, including the WHO’s AHD package of care, emphasizes the urgent need to identify individuals with AHD and deliver timely, integrated interventions in order to reduce AIDS-related mortality and prevent new HIV infections.
CQUIN’s AHD community of practice (CoP) will focus on strengthening AHD service delivery as a critical component of its broader commitment to resilient and responsive HIV programming. Technical assistance and CoP activities will focus on mitigating funding losses and saving lives. Priorities will be refined as the impact of service disruptions on HIV morbidity and mortality is better understood. Provisionally, they will include:
- Revising country-led AHD implementation roadmaps.
- Supporting member countries to refine and scale models of care for AHD, with a focus on integrating AHD services into routine HIV programming within public sector facilities.
- Supporting MOHs to advance national guidance on integration of AHD services, using CQUIN’s ten strategic choices for integrating AHD services into routine healthcare.
- Strengthening systems for tracking the coverage and quality of AHD services across the Network. The CQUIN AHD M&E Toolkit, which aims to enhance data quality, service monitoring, and accountability, will be operationalized in 8-10 countries over the course of the project.
