A Tribute to the Life and Work of Dr. Peter Preko

Mar 11, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Peter Preko on February 21, 2025. Dr. Preko was the principal investigator and project director for ICAP’s CQUIN Learning Network.

His kindness, dedication, and warmth touched all who knew him. Through patient and gentle encouragement, he inspired others to believe in themselves and to push towards a common goal. Those who had the privilege of being part of his team saw him as a father figure and a trusted mentor. Through his renowned diplomatic skills, he unified people with different perspectives, instilling in them his enthusiasm and optimism. Always brimming with ideas, thinking of what needs to be done, what could be done better. Dr. Preko was an innovative, kind, loyal, elegant and steadfast hero whose work touched countless lives.

Dr. Preko was a distinguished public health professional with over two decades of experience in HIV programming.  He first joined ICAP more than 15 years ago and has been a beloved part of the organization ever since.  His visionary leadership was evident in his groundbreaking work with the Coverage, Quality, and Impact Network (CQUIN), and in leading the launch of the HIV Impact Network for Vertical Transmission Elimination (HIVE). He was instrumental in advancing differentiated service delivery models for HIV care, promoting person-centered services, and ensuring quality HIV care for people who need it most.

Dr. Preko began his career in HIV work as the CEO and co-founder of AIDS ALLY, a local NGO in Ghana that provided care and treatment before national HIV treatment programs started in Africa. Dr. Preko’s illustrious career included significant contributions to the University of Washington’s I-TECH program, where he served as the senior HIV care and treatment advisor to the Malawi Ministry of Health. He also worked with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Eswatini as the PEPFAR Eswatini care and treatment lead, and held senior positions at ICAP in Eswatini, AED-SHARP, and Engender Health in Ghana.

While he may not witness the full impact of his dedication to CQUIN and HIVE, we are committed to continuing this vital work in his honor, guided always by his indomitable spirit. We trust that all of you—his colleagues and friends—will join us in ensuring that his enduring legacy thrives.

Dr. Preko leaves behind a loving wife, Lena and his 3 children Peter Jr, Gabby and Caleb. For those who would like to support them in their grief, please donate to the GoFundMe account.

His contributions to CQUIN and the lives he impacted will never be forgotten.
