Perspectives on Differentiated Service Delivery – Dr. Nomthi Lukhele: “CQUIN Helps Us Keep an Open Mind”
Dr. Nomthandazo “Nomthi” Lukhele is the National ART Coordinator for Swaziland’s National AIDS Programme (SNAP) at the country’s Ministry of Health. Dr. Lukhele spoke with us about how differentiated service delivery (DSD) is changing the HIV care and treatment landscape in Swaziland, and about CQUIN’s role in helping SNAP explore new approaches to one of their top priorities: monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
CQUIN Support Helps Advance Differentiated Service Delivery in Zimbabwe
The network is seconding staff to ministries of health to spearhead the expansion of DSD at national scale. This is one of many efforts by the learning network to help partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa reach the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets and achieve epidemic control. ASLM Launches Laboratory Systems Learning Network (LabCOP) in partnership with CQUIN
"At a recent meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) launched a new initiative called the Laboratory Systems Strengthening Community of Practice (LabCoP). LabCoP is a learning network of multidisciplinary country teams working together to create knowledge and share information, experiences and best practices."
CQUIN Countries Gather to Advance Differentiated Service Delivery for Adolescents
Johannesburg, South Africa – The HIV Coverage, Quality, and Impact Network (CQUIN) held its second “community of practice” workshop, focused on differentiated service delivery for adolescents and young adults. The three-day gathering, held from October 25-27 in Johannesburg, brought together nearly 70 participants from all nine CQUIN countries.
Perspectives – Dr. James Hakim on the REALITY Trial and the Future of Differentiated Service Delivery for Individuals with Advanced HIV
The University of Zimbabwe Professor of Medicine has been working on combating HIV/AIDS for decades. We caught up with Dr. Hakim at the CQUIN workshop for patients at high risk of advanced HIV disease progression to ask him about the REALITY trial, a study on advanced treatment for HIV patients in four countries that he and his colleagues worked on together. It is a testament to how far the fight against HIV has come.
ICAP Explores Differentiated Service Delivery Models for Adolescents Living with HIV
New York – With support from ICAP’s CQUIN learning network, a team of pediatricians from ICAP at Columbia University is working with the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) to learn from adolescents living with HIV about their preferences regarding care and treatment.
South-to-south Experience Sharing: Lessons from Kenya
Mbabane, Swaziland – At a CQUIN experience-sharing meeting hosted by ICAP Swaziland, Dr. Maureen Syowai from ICAP in Kenya greeted the Swazi and Zimbabwean audience with a warm “Sanibonani". Dr. Syowai skillfully conveyed her country’s experiences with implementation and scale-up of differentiated service delivery (DSD) to an audience of about 30 participants from ICAP Swaziland, the Swaziland National AIDS Program (SNAP), and the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC). Her presentation quickly blossomed into a lively dialogue with the audience, sparking new ideas for systematic and rapid roll-out of DSD.
Ethiopia Launches Differentiated Care Initiative Focused on Appointment Spacing
New York – As Ethiopia moves to a “test and start” approach to HIV treatment, the number of people eligible for antiretroviral therapy (ART) has greatly increased. In response, Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and its partners are exploring innovative approaches to increasing ART coverage, which UNAIDS estimates was 59 percent in 2016.
